A Guide to Telegram Group and Channel for your Business
telegram group and channel

Telegram is a free and popular messaging app, an alternative to WhatsApp. Its key aim is effective communication between people for personal or professional use, whether you run a small or large business.

In 2022, the app had 550 million active monthly users [1]. If you’re familiar with it, you’ve probably noticed that in addition to the usual one-on-one conversations, it also provides channels and groups, making it a preferred choice for businesses.

In this article, we will discuss everything from A to Z on what you need to know about Telegram Channel and Group to clear up any confusions you might have.

Here are a few things this article will cover:

1. Difference between a Telegram Channel and a Telegram Group?

2. Why use a Telegram Channel, and how to create one.

3. Why use a Telegram Group, and how to create one.

4. Which one should you be using for your business?

Difference between a Telegram Group and Channel

The baseline is that Telegram Channels are used to send one-way broadcast messages, and a Telegram Group is like any other group chat where all members can send and receive text messages.

Group admins in Telegram Groups have the authority to regulate member communications and the group’s visibility, public or private. They can also appoint other members of the group as admins.

Telegram Channels:

  • Unlimited number of subscribers.

  • Only Admins can send messages.

  • Subscribers are not able to see other subscribers in the channel.

  • You can track the number of people who have seen your messages.

  • When new subscriber joins a Telegram channel, they have immediate access to the entire message history.

Telegram Groups:

  • Up to 200,000 members.

  • Anyone in the group can send messages.

  • Everyone can see and check the status of other members that are in the group.

Why Use a Telegram Channel?

Channels are great for your brand because they let you stay in touch with potential customers, inform them of the newest information about your goods or services, and get their feedback on potential improvements.

How to Create a Telegram Channel

There are two types of Telegram Channels:

1. Private channel – only available to subscribers and is hidden from public search. You must get a link from the owner to join a private channel. For organisations and teams, a private channel is a fantastic solution. This channel can also be used to record private notes, reflections, and more. You also always have the option to make your private channel public at any time.

2. Public channel – accessible to all users. A public channel can be found in search results and has a short address link.

You can create a Telegram Channel using the desktop or mobile (Android and iOS) apps:

Android App: Open the list of chats, and select “New Channel” from the menu by clicking the menu icon.

iOS App: Click the new message icon on the upper right corner of the “Chats” tab. Choose “New Channel”.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create and set up a Telegram Channel.

On desktop:

Step 1: Open Telegram on your browser and log in.

Step 2: Hover your mouse on the left side of the screen where your contacts are, and a blue circle will pop out. Once the circle pops up, click on it and select “New Channel”.

Step 3: Once your channel is created, you can start customising your channel by uploading a logo. You can do this by first clicking on your own icon. Once you click on your own logo, a pop-up will appear on the right titled ‘Edit’.

Step 4: Once the ‘Edit’ section comes up, click on the camera icon in the blue circle to add a profile picture.

Why Use a Telegram Group?

Multiple users can send and receive messages simultaneously in a Telegram group. Up to 200,000 users can join a group on Telegram. Building a community of clients or prospects for a business is made incredibly simple by this feature.

Which one should you be using for your business?

Now that you know how to create your own Telegram Channel and Group, which best suits you and your business?

Telegram Group might be most suitable for you if you prefer interacting with your audience, including getting feedback, inquiring and learning more about your business, and sparking conversations. Depending on your goals, you can also choose if you want your group to be private or public.

On the other hand, a Telegram Channel is best suited for sharing content in blog form. Telegram also offers a higher engagement rate as compared to social media and blogs because of its push notifications and higher engagement rate.

All in all, it depends on what your business goals are. However, to make full use of the app, having both a Group and Channel which complement each other can significantly help your business.
